When an AI Agent Is More Complexity Than You Need

Some workflows need a clear recommendation, not an autonomous loop.

Agents add planning, tool use, state, permissions, and failure modes. That complexity is justified only when the work genuinely requires adaptive multi-step execution.

For a stable decision flow, a deterministic service or recommendation pattern can be faster to build, easier to evaluate, and easier to govern.

Begin with the smallest capable architecture. Add agency when the workflow proves it needs dynamic planning rather than because the technology is available.

Put the lesson to work.
